There’s a massive countdown happening right now to the largest event in Australia. Vivid Sydney is a 23-day festival of lights, ideas, and music. Labeled one of the world’s largest music/arts festivals, Vivid’s all about presenting the city’s most iconic structures and landmarks in a display of art projections and live performances, both local and international.  

With over 300 different events to choose from and scattered around the city, Vivid is as exciting as it is overwhelming. To save you time and disappointment we’ve compiled our guide some of Vivid’s best events. The festival kicks off in only a few weeks so a lot of Vivid events are already sold out, but tickets are still available for everything for everything you’ll find below. Well, at the time of publishing anyway…

01. AIR

It’s been nine years since French electronic duo AIR have been back in Australia. Prepare yourself to enter a mystical and sensual world as they perform their compelling discography for two nights at the Opera House. This is a rare experience to be lured in by sublime and other-worldly sounds of one of France’s most progressive names in music.

02. Immersion

This event may not be at a nightclub or an underground art venue, but it is a must for all Vivid Sydney goers. Immersion is a free installation by Hammerlighting located in the heart of the city’s Royal Botanic Garden. The piece explores the colour red in all of its sensory wonders. Yes it’s going to be packed, yes there are probably going to be screaming children everywhere, yes tourists will invade your personal space—but at least the colour will match your mood.

03. Colourblast Party

A multi-room visual experience full of interactive performances, UV installations, and lasers. With an all-star DJ line-up of only the finest in the electronic genre including Tenzin and DJ Sol, Colourblast promises to showcase Vivid Sydney in a tightly packed nightclub environment.

04. Tokyo Disco

Explore Japan’s unique nightlife without a passport at The Argyle.  A venue that’s bound to be full of kitschy neon, interactive performances, and a luminous cherry blossom garden installation. With a lineup that includes Who Killed Mickey and DJ Crespo, you can immerse yourself in some Tokyo beats.

05. Women in Electronic Music Showcase II

Party late into the night with this massive showcase, celebrating a handful of pioneering female producers, beatmakers, and DJs from Sydney and beyond. Featuring the likes of Kučka, Andy Garvey, and Miss Blanks, this event is one night you need to be at to experience the incredible exploration of female artists in the electronic scene.

06. 107

A post-industrial and multidisciplinary space for emerging creatives to thrive, 107 is a place for unpolished and raw melodious sounds for the soul. Expect the unexpected with artists including The NOW now and Bare Necessities over six nights of carefully curated experimental sounds.

07. Purple Rain: A Tribute to Prince

On the night of what would have been legendary artist Prince’s 59th birthday, The Soda Factory will be having a night to celebrate Prince’s all-time best hits throughout six hours of DJs, live bands and even acoustic performances. Of course, the venue will also be blessed with purple lights in honour of beloved Prince.

08. Freda’s & Down Under Space

Established in 2011, Freda’s has become a space for all things experimental and creative for emerging artists  and musicians. Over the duration of Vivid Sydney, expect each night to be unique and special, with the main goal of each main act being an interactive and magical experience for both the performer and audience.

09. CLIPPED

Clipped is a festival that celebrates and analyses music videos. It’s part exhibition, premieres, industry discussions, and music video competition, with a particular focus on Australian and New Zealand filmmakers. Vivid are flying out prominent director Warren Fu, who’s worked with Daft Punk, The Weeknd, Snoop Dogg, Pharrell Williams, to oversee the one-day-only event.
