Art hot spots to spice up your week in a heartbeat

Weekly updates

As I am writing this, I feel like it’s the beginning of WYD 2.0. I am typing this on a brand new computer. That’s right, I no longer have to copy and paste my Q’s, A’s and W’s like I did last year. My old lappy and I had a good run but this is a fresh and fully functioning start, so it’s a good time to touch base again with the core of this weekly art update.

Australia has such a rich and diverse art scene that extends beyond the NGV’s walls alone. The local galleries and your neighbourhood artists that are putting in crazy amounts of work deserve all the love they can get, sure, but that’s not the reason we post this weekly write-up. It’s just as much about you finding ways to inject some art and culture into your week to break up that working grind. With so much to check out just around the corner, it’s worth sending your mate’s a ‘WYD?’ message and sussing the gallery hot spots around you. There’s never a bad time to soak up some inspo, so be sure to have a flick through the list below and see if anything get’s that right side of your brain churning.

In the meantime, I’m going to enjoy the benefits of my new laptop—all I need now is a working internet connection.

As always, make sure to let us know WYD by sending your art events to [email protected].

01. Deadstock - Melbourne CBD

This one is looking pretty wild. KodjoWild, Liamme Cardinal and Kyle Adams have joined forces to bring you DEADSTOCK: a celebration of sneakers. Taking on classic silhouettes with their own individual artistic interpretations, these three Melbourne artists have created a sneaker heaven that even the QV fishbowl Hype store would envy. We’ll be seeing the likes of the PUMA Disc Blaze, Nike Air Max 95 and the Galaxy Foamposite—just to name a few.

Held at No Vacancy Gallery, this is one for the sneakerheads, and if you’re reading Acclaim online we can pretty much assume that includes you. Prints will be up for grabs of course, and the first 50 to make a purchase will also receive a complimentary tote and sticker combo, so be sure to bring some cash moneys.

Head over to their Facebook event for the full scoop, and bare in mind that Gage Roads Brewing Co will have beers on deck, and DJ SAL is said to make an apperance—like you needed any more reasons to come along.

02. Talking Knowledge - St Kilda

Using art as a way of creating a forum for discussion and a network of cultural expression, the good people at Alliance Française have linked with The Torch Project to support members of the indigenous community who are incarcerated. With their Indigenous Arts in Prisons and Community program, The Torch stands as a crucial source of motivation and inspiration for many. Held at the Eildon Gallery, Talking Knowledge is set to explore the two-way relationship between art workers and the artists’ whose stories they support.

For more details on the opening night, be sure to head over here and check out The Torch and the Yalukit Wilum Ngargee site for more ways to get involved with such a powerful and important project.

03. Nice One Picasso - NSW

For those of you with Sydney Laneway Tickets, be sure to keep an eye out of Jonny Niesche’s mesmeric art installation.

Currently spinning at Sydney College of the Arts, the hypnotising piece stands as a preview of the upcoming exhibition ‘Nice One Picasso,’ curated by Liam Garstang. If you didn’t cop Laneway tickets there’s no need to stress, as the exhibition will open to the public on February 8. You can find more details here, and in the meantime, be sure to check out more of Jonny’s stunning work here.

04. Summer 40 Exhibition - North Melbourne

This one is pretty huge. With a lineup of 40 artists, Rubicon ARI’s SUMMER ’40 exhibition brings a huge range of talents together under one roof. With the sun emoji setting the theme, there’s plenty to check out in the North Melbourne gallery. Featuring some of our favs from the past, you can catch works by Kiani Wong, Jourdan Hickey, and, well, 38 others more.
Coming in as their first exhibition of 2017, it’s safe to say the team are heading into this year with the kind of a level of ambition that is absolute goals. Running until Feb 18, such a large and diverse host of talents isn’t one to be missed so be sure to take a look at their site for more details.
