This is the only photo that I took of any actual art at Art Basel. You’re probably wondering if I took it as some sort of comment on the excessive capitalism of the art industry forcing itself on the Asian market. But really I just took it because the flash on my camera was broken and I knew the neon would work on film.

Newell Harry – The Natives Are Restless (2006).

I got lost trying to find a hidden gallery in an industrial suburb of Hong Kong. I wasn’t mad about it because it gave me the chance to wander and take some shots. I eventually found the gallery but the exhibition it was showing was bad.

My favourite part of this shot isn’t the clique of girls learning to play basketball but the old guys on the bench with their shirts off (or half off) to cope with the humidity.

I went to a brunch for Takashi Murakami because I was told I would be able to “interview” him. Apparently “interview” got lost in translation and what they really meant was, “there will be a Q&A at the end of this press conference.”

This is Takashi Murakami’s back. The lady in the suit next to him kept awkwardly hovering behind him while her friend in the distance took creep shots so it looked like they were together.

Shortly after this I meet Murakami in person. I shook his hand and told him how much I admired him and his work. He was very warm and kind as he thanked me. I’m trying to do this thing that Louis CK talks about where when you meet someone famous you don’t take a photo but rather you shake their hand and say hello. It’s cool but I still wish I had a pic for the ‘gram tbh.

While I was outside the convention centre that hosts Art Basel I saw this guy wheeling out some huge art works that somebody probably dropped an insane amount of money on.
