Watch: Go behind the scenes of FKA twigs’ recent Allure mag shoot

An exclusive snapshot into an enigmatic mind

Posted by

A behind the scenes clip of FKA twigs’ shoot with Allure has been released. twigs was given full control of the shoot, and it’s as experimental and transcendental as you expected. In nearly two and a half minutes of silence, you can see twigs contorting her body; her caricature dominant against a white backdrop.

“People always want to overanalyse things that are creative” she tells Allure. “I’m a traditional showgirl in a sense. I spent years of my early 20s working among performance artists. That’s rule one of being an underground artist: you do your own makeup, hair, and costumes.”

For twigs, she tells the mag, it’s important to have creative control and ability. “Imagine you’re an artist that didn’t know how to do your own makeup, didn’t know how to do your own hair, didn’t know how to put an outfit together, didn’t write your own music, didn’t direct your own videos, didn’t produce your own music. They’re not artists. They’re vehicles, vessels. The majority of them are like that.”

From this, her desire to remain elusive becomes palpable. “I don’t want to be described as anything,” she continues. “It’s like hashtags. Hashtag this, hashtag that. Hashtag blue, hashtag pink, hashtag cute dogs. Do you know what I mean? Everything has a hashtag.” For twigs, it’s about staying true to her own creative judgements. “You don’t have to ask permission to do a video saying something that you want to say. All you can do is follow your instincts.” If this behind the scenes glimpse is anything to go by, twigs’ instincts are genius. Check out the behind the scenes exclusive clip above.
