Girls With Grills
"Fashion and styling is only important to us, in the way that it is another vehicle that allows us to express ourselves. It an extension of the music we play/what is inspiring us at the time" Hoops Djs
When it comes to getting peeps on the dance floor, these girls are musical crack. Meet Sydney ladiez (not ladies) Anna Lunoe, Ninalasvegas and Bad Ezzy AKA the Hoops DJs. Together they have an uncanny ability to make any party pop, be that one of their loose as shit club nights or a high profile after party for Sydney’s social elite, with their powers combined they are the party planeteers… that is if Captain Planet was Annalise Braakensiek.

With you all having a pretty heavy history in the music industry individually, how did you all get together to form Hoops?
We all knew each other before Hoops, but weirdly it was Annalise Braakensiek and Sass & Bide who brought us together! Anna had been DJing for a while and Nina and I had just thrown our first Hoops party when the three of us were booked together to play a Sass & Bide party. A few weeks later we got a call out of the blue asking if we would like to play The Falls festival. It turns out Annalise had been at the party and liked us so much she recommended us to a good friend of hers who also happened to be booking acts for Falls. We tried to explain that Hoops was a twosome and that Anna was a solo DJ and the reply we got was "we want the 3 DJs we saw at Sass & Bide". Then Hoops was born!
It's no surprise that the DJ scene at least in Australia is a pretty guy-heavy industry, how have you been accepted in the industry? Do dudes dismiss or do you get a few props from the fellas?
We've been friends with a lot of the male DJs in Sydney for a long time. In fact, one of the reasons we starts Hoops was that we'd seen a lot of our guy friends rise through the DJ ranks and we though it was time the girls got a turn. We're pretty lucky in that respect because they supported us from the very beginning. It takes a little while before you start getting genuine props from the guys, but when you do get them, you know you really deserve it.
You guys hold parties once a month right in Sydney? What's the vibe at these and what type of people come to them?
The vibe at our parties is PARTY. With lots of dancing. We hold them every two or so months now, more as a special event than a monthly. Everyone loves to get dressed up – it's one of those nights when people go all out with bling, shoes, hair, make-up etc. Everyone comes for the fun and to see their friends play. We have an all girl line up and we try to get DJs from across a lot of different scenes so everybody parties together.
Weird question but say each of you had a persona ala The Spice Girls, what do you think each of you would be? What does each person bring to Hoops?
If we were the spice girls? LOL! Ezzy would be Bad Spice, as she's renown for sneaking shots and spin-backs in between songs. Nina would be No Eyes Spice and Earring Tangled in Headphones Spice as she is the proud owner of a big fringe (eye covering), big earring and BIG HAIR at most gigs. And Anna would be SOCIAL Spice, friendly, well presented and ALWAYS in the social pages.
In terms of music, we have similar tastes but individual styles. Ezzy can always out do you with a remix she's found of a track you already love, Nina can play American Boy at ANY time in a set, and Anna knows all the words to Controversy by Prince. Regardless, three record collections is always a plus.
You guys have supported some pretty impressive artists like Diplo and Dizzee Rascal in the past. Ever get star struck or are these guys usually pretty cool?
Doing support slots for artists you love is one of the best things about djing. As for getting star struck, there is defiantly a little bit of that, but usually we are just so excited to be involved and constantly in a state of gratitude/pinching each other. Most artists are really cool, we have been lucky to have had some great experiences. We didn't get to meet Dizzee though which was disappointing- he rolls 3 deep!
You guys have rad style. How important is fashion and styling to Hoops?
Why thanks! Fashion and styling is only important to us, in the way that it is another vehicle that allows us to express ourselves. It an extension of the music we play/what is inspiring us at the time... but sometimes what might seem like a statement is just what ever is clean on laundry day.
