Insa X Fuel Garage Bentley

When A Street Artist Sits Down With Car Junkies

"I really wanted to step up my collection of objects of desire; items that become overly lusted after and “fetishised”, Cars are an obvious example of this." Insa X Fuel Garage Bentley
Interview By Vinny Tang
The Bentley ARNAGE is one of the most highly desired cars in the world. But when renown UK graffiti artist and the boys from FUEL Garage get busy and prepare one for the most flamboyant rally in the world, the Gumball 3000, the result is nothing less than breathtaking. Vinnie sits down and has a chat with Insa, the artist behind the flawless Bentley.
So who is Insa?

I started off doing graffiti along time ago, from just tagging and making a mess I progressed into full-scale pieces and big walls, the whole time I had always been into art and creativity in a broad sense. The last couple of years I’ve been perusing my art side a lot more. My latest theme of work-‘Graffiti Fetish’ is inspired by my years writing, the obsessive nature of it and the glossy desirable imagery of consumer culture.

How did the FUEL guys approach you? Did you have total creative control?

I think me and FUEL garage had been aware of each other for a while so when we met we knew we had to work on some things together. We have a similar style, both using a lot of black on black with them having orange as an accent colour rather than my pink.

You have modified previous rides before. Why do you choose to use cars as an artistic outlet?

I really wanted to step up my collection of objects of desire; items that become overly lusted after and “fetishised”, Cars are an obvious example of this. With the curves and slick design lines its easy to see why men of a certain age replace their sexual conquests with buying and obsessing over fancy cars.

Why did the Bentley end up looking like it did?

We wanted to take the epitome of British luxury and modify it as far as we could to a level not seen on a Bentley before. There is over £75,000 worth of mods, nothing has been missed; from the 5998cc twin turbo engine, brakes, transmission and suspension, all rolling on new 22” rims. The people responsible for the amazing work done on the car are Mansory- Germany’s elite car modifiers. Done in FUEL’s signature orange the whole thing is re-trimmed in orange and black leather, orange alcantara and carbon fibre. The final finish of the car had to be black on black with just a hint of orange. For that last touch of exclusivity we tinted the windows in my custom graffiti fetish heel print in black.

You also designed the outfits the female drivers wore, how did you go about designing those?

Well I have been designing a lot of clothing lately and we couldn’t let the girls pilot this beast without the right attire. I worked with designer label Oki-Ni, who produces my hooded tops, to produce the zip up hoodie/hotpant all-in-ones, in a black on black all over print.

Are you a car enthusiast yourself or are they purely just a canvas?

I do love cars, but purely on an aesthetic level. I’m into lowriders, the whole style and culture that surround these hot cars. Maybe one day I’ll learn about engines and all that but right now they are a great canvas to work on.

Any future automotive projects coming soon?

Me and FUEL have several ideas in the pipeline and are currently planning a project I am very excited about - the first Euro Donk!
