Mixing Hip-Hop & House & Daydreaming About Dressing Diana
"Growing up I would always admire female DJ's (and still do) but never had the balls to do it, but my boyfriend SureShot (a DJ here in NY since the age of 16) actually was a great catalyst in teaching and encouraging me." Radio Rose
Don’t mistakenly assume that Radio Rose is a product of her name and only gets her hands dirty on the decks. BK wonder woman, Radio Rose, is one shit hot designer and stylist and has been for years before she somehow found time to became one of the hottest female DJ’s in NYC.

Hey Rose, can you start by telling me the basics and intro’ing yourself to your Aussie admirers?
Radio Rose Garcia I'm the ripe old age of 27.Born and Raised in Brooklyn.
I enjoy blueberries and long walks in the rain. I am a Jane of all trades, a Blogger, DJ, Freelance stylist and former Fashion editor for Missbehave Magazine. I'm a scorpio and I have a best friend named ChinaWhite (my laptop).
So I figure the radio in Rose is because you’re s super-star DJ? How’d you get into mixing and how did that develop into a career for you? What were you doing before music or has this always been your life and dream?
Hahaha, well, thanks but not exactly, I got the name RadioRose from a funny convo with some of my friends about my blog aroundthewaygirls and it just stuck although it definitely works perfectly for djaying (see how that worked there).
I've actually worked in the Fashion industry on various levels for the past 8 years. I've done everything from Designing, Visual Merchandising, retail, consulting to styling. I have been influenced by music all of my life, i'd even design clothes based on some of my favorite songs.
Growing up I would always admire female DJ's (and still do) but never had the balls to do it, but my boyfriend SureShot (a DJ here in NY since the age of 16) actually was a great catalyst in teaching and encouraging me. From then on I was what you call a bedroom DJ for about 3 yrs before I ever played for an audience that didn't include my teddy bears. About a little over a year ago I finally got the confidence to jump out and play at parties. Since then I've been doing tons of parties in NY, Boston,LA and MIA, mostly private fashion related events and many with ladies I admire like Jasmine Solano, DJ Lindsey, Roxy Cottontail,DJ Elle and NI** from NinaSky. I've also gotten a chance to do a few online Radioshows (big hugs to The RottenAppleChix on A-list Radio and everyone at PNC Radio). I love every bit of it and feel blessed that I have a chance to express myself musically.
Who/what are some of your musical influences and what style(s) do you play?
I play a little bit of everything but my favorite is definetly 70s soul. I just want to parade around and twirl to those long endless beats. But in NY I mainly play hiphop/house/r and b from all the decades. Some of my favorite DJ's are the ones that can skip through the decades and mix old with new flawlessly or play amazing old-school sets that have your feet begging for mercy like DJ Kiss.
What are some bombdiggity gigs you’ve played and who would you love the opportunity to play alongside?
I love all the gigs at get to play for, but my favorite were these summer series parties in 08 at this store called Harriets Alter Ego that was here in Brooklyn. There was such a great energy and I got to see and play for some of my favorite new musical acts like Mickey Factz and Raye 6. It truly was taking a glimpse into the future of music.
You’ve moved into styling too, how’d that happen?
Actually I’ve always been styling, I've been doing it for about 7 years and counting. I guess people get confused since my name's Radio Rose, they assume all I do is DJ. But I used to design way back when, I used to make a few custom pieces for some rappers. That soon became challenging because I was young and misguided, so I started styling. Styling was a great way for me to still utilize my talents without feeling "green". I had the great oppurtunity to work with people that always kept me on the right track and gave me wonderful advice. People like Anoma Whittaker of Complex and Donald Lawrence (a freelance stylist in NY) are truly my mentors and I'm so glad I learned so much from the both of them.
It was one of those things where I truly had an epiphany and said duh! this is what I've always wanted to do with life!
Can you tell me some shoots or spreads you’ve recently worked on? It’s your time to name drop lady!
Recently I've worked on a few music videos like Nina Sky's On Some Bullshit, SophiaFresh What It Is and part of Day26's Stadium Music.
I've also styled MadeMe Fall 09 lookbook and collaborated on a dope custom piece for her Fall collection. Besides that I've been doing some behind the scenes consulting work for some large scale labels.
What’s your signature style and what brands are you all over?
I don't particularly have a signature style although I am known to lean towards all things neon, vintage and ladylike.
Some of my favorite brands right now are creating a whole new category in fashion.
I love MadeMe because it optimizes Tomboy chic, Jeremy Scott has and probably always will be a favorite of mine, Hood by Air and Third Floor New York are also ones to watch for in Fall 09 they are both changing and challenging what we consider typical in men's fashion.
Given the opportunity to style anyone dead or alive, who would it be and what would you put them in?
Hahaha this question is always asked in my interviews and I always have to switch it up. So for this season I would love to style disco-era Diana Ross but in Tomboy chic ,london punk girl look. All her glorious curly hair, beautiful makeup but amazing masculine pieces. It's all about the perfect balance between femine and masculine.
What’s in the diary for 09? Any projects you can leak to us, or at least give us a heads up on where we can expect to peep Miss Radio Rose?
I'm working on a few fun mixes featuring a ton of new artists to keep on your rosters and to keep you dancing! A few fun fashion projects that include some collaborations and new fashion ventures! Also rocking several parties with my great friend and amazing artist Jasmine Solano (collectively we call ourselves 'The Honeydippers').
There are a ton a places online that will keep you in the loop with Radio Rose and her exploits, her blog Around The Way Girls, her Twitter, her Myspace and you can check more of her work here.
