Last Saturday saw two of the legends of the rap and producing game face off in a DJ battle reminiscent of the OG hip-hop days. Pete Rock and DJ Premier, two of the mainstays of ’90s East Coast hip-hop production have worked together to create unforgettable music such as on Nas’s Illmatic. And on Saturday, the duo blessed Miami with some unreal beats at Sidebar.
Opened by veteran mixers DJ Heron and Self Born, this walk down memory lane seems to fly in the very face of anyone who says hip-hop is dead. For the many many of us who missed out on the action, there is some iPhone-quality footage around, and at this point, we will take anything.
The duo began the set by paying homage to their friend and collaborator, the highly respected J Dilla. Rock also joined Preemo for a live version of ‘The Creator’.
The incomparable Pete Rock with his jazzy vibes is currently down under, touring Australia with CL Smooth. Our mates in Adelaide, Perth, and Brisbane still have the opportunity to catch him IRL over the next week.
If you’re nostalgic for the old days have a reminisce over this.
