On March 22, the hip-hop community lost a lyrical icon. Making up one third of groundbreaking hip-hop act A Tribe Called Quest, still regarded as one of the single most artistically significant hip-hop acts of all time, Phife Dawg was a tremendously talented lyricist and performer tragically taken long before his time.

In tribute to Phife Dawg’s legacy, and with respect to his untimely passing, we’re joining our friends at Slingshot Events, B.D.B.C, Street Elite, as well as DJ Peril in hosting a special screening of Beats, Rhymes & Life: Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, the Michael Rapaport-directed study of A Tribe Called Quest’s legacy and life in the hip-hop community, and music world in its entirety. Featuring interviews from such acts as The Beastie Boys, Pharrell Williams, Mos Def, Santigold, Monie Love, Pete Rock, Large Professor, De La Soul, The Jungle Brothers, Mary J Blige, and Common, all of whom attribute influence from, and considerable respect for, A Tribe Called Quest and their storied influence on the hip-hop genre.

The special screening of the film, slated to be held at Southbank’s The Backlot, will be followed by a further celebration of A Tribe Called Quest with DJ DEMIZE spinning Tribe classics as well as tapping in to the extensive and extraordinary catalogues of both Q-Tip and the late Phife Dawg. Tickets will be limited, and proceeds will be delivered to DiabetesVIC in honour of Phife Dawg.
