25th Anniversary of Nike Air Max 1 and Air Trainer 1 Ads

Nike in the '80s was all about science

Happy birthday, Nike Air Max 1 and Air Trainer 1, you’re officially 25 years old now. To celebrate, Crooked Tongues has taken a look back at the original 1987 advertising campaign used to launch the iconic sneakers.

With the help of ‘revolutionary cushioning,’ ‘a passion for science’ and using buff ’80s sport stars, in terms of advertising, they just don’t make ‘em like they used to. When was the last time you saw an advertisement with graphs, statistics and that much text? Nike in the ’80s was all about science.

Using bold statements like ‘Man does not live by one sport alone’ and ‘You don’t have to take our word for it, just ask any of the quarterbacks who have to face [campaign athlete] Howie Long,’ it makes us wish that sports advertisements these days had as much zing.
