When Apple upgraded to the iOS 6 last June, they added emojis depicting gay and lesbian couples for the first time, they stopped short however, of including ethnically diverse emoji(ns?).

The tech conglomerate has come under recent pressure from US TV personality, Tahj Mowry, who isn’t actually the first big name to take to twitter in frustration; back in 2012, international diplomat Miley Cyrus launched #emojiethnicityupdate.

In a recent open letter from MTV, Apple’s Vice President of Worldwide Corporate Communications, Katie Cotton, stated that “Our emoji characters are based on the Unicode standard, which is necessary for them to be displayed properly across many platforms.  There needs to be more diversity in the emoji character set, and we have been working closely with the Unicode Consortium in an effort to update the standard.”

Let’s hope we see some changes before the iPhone 15 drops…
