Nobody’s a bigger Pharrell fanboy than Tyler, the Creator

A shoutout in all caps from the King of Fanboys

The power of caps lock is harnessed once again by Tyler, the Creator in order to express his intense level of gratitude for the creative genius that is Pharrell Williams. Indeed, the master of hats has long been a role model for young Tyler, and he does what we should all be doing for those we look up to. He gives a massive shoutout on the ‘gram, and the love is so clear as it blares in caps, where he depicts the ways in which Williams has played a large part in his life. It’s never a bad time to pay homage to those you look up to, whether they are A-list celebrities or people you see in your everyday life.

Yep, shoutouts are good for your soul and below we put together a chain of shoutouts that pretty much took form on its own. Really, it’s a testimony to the power of reaching out to those you respect and it (sort of) creates a beautiful circle of shoutouts which you could argue is like the circle of karma or something, you know that whole “you get what you give” mantra? Either way, this is only a small snippet of the love that these artists are putting out there, but it still goes a long way. And of course, read Tyler’s ode to Pharrell below.

I WAS 15 ATTENDING SUMMER SCHOOL AT HAWTHORNE HIGH, SPENDING MOST OF MY NIGHTS TRYING TO FIND ANY SNIPPETS OF THE ALBUM ON VARIOUS GERMAN SITES. THEN 7/25/06 CAME. IMM RANGES IN DIFFERENT STYLES AND SOUNDS AND I BELIEVE THATS WHY I GRAVITATED TO IT SO MUCH. THE UPRIGHT BASSLINE ON “CAN I HAVE IT LIKE THAT” OR THE BUCKETS ON “HOW DOES IT FEEL”. OFF THE WALL MJ ON “NUMBER 1”. I STILL TO THIS DAY DONT THINK I CAN MAKE A SONG BETTER THAN “THAT GIRL”. AND “I REALLY LIKE YOU GIRL” IS EASILY THE BEST SONG ON THIS ALBUM WITH YOUR BEST TIMBERLAKE IMPERSONATION AND STEVIE HARMONICA. IMM ALSO INCLUDES “RASPY SHIT” WHICH IS THE WORST SONG IN YOUR DISCOGRAPHY I HATE THAT SONG SO MUCH YOU ARE SO GROSS FOR THAT. BUT THE ONE THAT STOOD OUT WAS “YOU CAN DO IT TOO”. THE SADE BASSLINE, THE STRING PAD WITH CHORDS THAT YOU CLAIM ONLY Q-TIP, YOU AND I LIKE, THE JAMIE CULLUM OUTRO! BEING 15 BLACK NOT REALLY “INTERESTED” IN WHAT THE MAJORITY OF MY PEERS WERE INTO, IT MADE ME FEEL SAFE. I WAS OPTIMISTIC, ALWAYS DAYDREAMING AND SETTING GOALS SO I FELT YOU WERE DIRECTLY SPEAKING TO ME. I REMEMBER CLANCY TELLING ME HOW JIMMY IOVINE THOUGHT THIS ALBUM WAS A “COMPLETE FUCKING FAILURE IT DIDNT WORK”. BUT SEE, IT DID, JUST NOT ON THE KIDS HE WAS LOOKING AT. THE ONES WHO JUST EXISTED;USED THE POPULAR SLANG;LISTENED TO WHAT WAS THROWN AT THEM;DRESSED IN CLOTHING THAT WAS TRENDING AT THE TIME. NOT SAYING THATS BAD BUT OF COURSE THIS WOULDNT WORK ON THEM. BUT IT WORKED ON ME AND I CREATED ODD FUTURE THAT SAME SUMMER. I WAS ACTUALLY NAIVE ENOUGH TO BELIEVE YOU AND THOUGHT I COULD DO ALL THESE AMAZING THINGS IF I REALLY TRIED. WHERE I GREW UP, NIGGAS GET STUCK AND NEVER MAKE IT OUT. JAIL, DEAD, SHIT JOBS, NOT REALLY GROWING. IT SEEMS LIKE AT A CERTAIN AGE, IDEAS; ORIGINAL THOUGHTS ARE NO LONGER A THING; I DIDNT FALL INTO THAT CYCLE. I’M NOW A YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR ALL BECAUSE I BELIEVED YOU WHEN YOU SAID I COULD BE. YOU WERE THE FIRST PERSON I CONTACTED WHEN I PULLED OFF THAT MCLAREN DEALERSHIP! THIS IS GETTING LONG SO UHHH, HBD IMM. I NEVER HAD BROTHERS,UNCLES OR MY FATHER AROUND SO THANK YOU FOR BEING THE MALE FIGURE I GRAVITATED TO. ALLOWING ME TO EMBRACE BEING DIFFERENT AND TRUSTING MY IDEAS ❤️

01. Tyler shouted out Kanye

The love Tyler has for Kanye has been about for years, as seen recently at his GOLF WANG show when he both announced his love for Ye and called him a “beautiful human.”

02. Kanye shouted out Skepta

Ye brought out about 50+ people up on stage with him for the most lit performance at the Brit Awards when he showcased ‘All Day’, alongside British grime MCs Skepta, Jammer, Shorty, Krept and Konan, Novelist, Stormzy and Fekky. He then ended the show with a big shoutout to Skepta as well.

And of course, Skepta returned the love.

03. Skepta shouted out Drake

Skepta dedicated a chunk of his interview with Zane Lowe earlier this year to address the possibility of a Drake/Skepta collab. He said that Drake understands that he doesn’t want to rush “fake music”.

Of course, Drake brought Skepta out on stage with him at a performance that clearly shut down the entire festival.

Yep, these two pretty much kill the shoutout game. From Instagram videos to repping each other on their shirts, these two are killing the fun luv.

Drake even mentioned Skepta in his thank you letter for If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which is yet another prime shoutout example.

04. Drake shouted out Drake and Josh

Whether he’s giving recognition for sharing a name or because it’s one of the greatest shows to have ever graced our TV sets, Drizzy gave a shoutout to one of the best.

05. Drake and Josh shouted out Oprah

Possibly one of the best running gags on the show that was the mother of all running gags was Josh’s love for Oprah.

Of course, real life Josh Peck has kept the  gag going even after the last episode of the Nickelodeon show aired in 2007.

06. Oprah inspired Tyler to give away free shit

We could, of course, go on down this path of shoutouts for quite a while, but we figured this beautiful moment in the GOLF WANG show would be a neat way to wrap it up.

Yep, this shoutout to Oprah also doubles as an exposé on the beauty of giving. In this case, Tyler was able to do a giveaway that fulfilled his Oprah-dream of giving away free shit whilst yelling at people. Unbelievable.
