Weekly updates

It’s difficult enough sometimes to pick which song you want to listen to on the walk to the train station, let alone the songs you want to play at your runway. When the stakes are as high as Milan Men’s Fashion Week, you really can’t rely on just shuffling any old playlist.

Indeed, the role music plays in fashion shows is not one to be understated and it’s pretty interesting to see what some of the world’s leading curators went for when picking their tracklists. If you asked us to pick the tunes, you’d probably cop a playlist that starts with A$AP’s ‘Fashion Killa’ and ends with Kanye’s ‘Facts.’ Luckily, there were more creative minds behind the tunes this week – take a look at the list below to see some of the variety.

01. Jil Sander

With a mood board that was as minimal as can be and a palette that shifts the way we think of ‘monotone’, the tunes created a spacey vibe that very much complemented the budding pace of the line. Known as ‘The Queen of Less’, Jil takes ‘less is more’ to a whole new level. Sharp tailoring and a cool colour palette which featured a whole lot of ombre gradients made for a line that manages to make an impact through its simplicity. Similarly, the music builds with the show and leads to an intense crescendo that ultimately manages to make a statement without trying too hard to overwhelm.

02. Neil Barrett

For Neil Barrett, this week saw his show held in Milan’s Palazzo del Senato. With a venue so grand, it only makes sense that the clothes and music had to match. With items showing off ’70s earthy tones, the hushed tunes at the start let the audience know something superb was brewing. As the singer croons California dreaming, the vibe of the show is largely reflected in the airy beat. As the tracks switch up, and as we hear a voice call out “gentlemen”, it becomes clear we are well and truly into it now, more so as the voice says “we can rebuild it, better, stronger, faster”. It begins to transition into a more futuristic tone, and the juxtaposition between a futuristic track and old-school styles make for a pretty impressive show. Bonus points if you spot Tre Samuels doing his thing.

03. Marni

For Marni, the Italian house went all out for their line, featuring kooky and very much out-there patterns. Adding a colourful twist to classic looks, the show brought in velcro straps like they were somehow cool again. Actually, who are we kidding, they brought velcro back well and proper. Yet despite standing in very stark contrast to Jil Sander’s line, for example, they played it very safe musically. Aside from the addition of some strings towards the end, the music was very much background music, allowing perhaps for a greater focus on the clothes. This was probably wise because full on patterns and tunes might have been too overwhelming and the constant beat throughout allows greater attention to be paid to the threads. But we still managed to spot Tre back at it again despite all that.

04. Prada

Prada, Prada, Prada. This year the team went above and beyond, and maybe all the way to space. With a taste of high-end hiking gear mixed in with NASA vibes, the line really set the bar high as far as luxe, high-fashion outdoor wear goes. The music came in straight away to a blacked out stage with a hip-hop heavy beat with bells ringing. The stage seemed set ready for Kanye and Jay Z to come right in, and as the models walked up the ramp we got a sense that Prada was well aware they had just fucked shit up. Building such an intense turn-up vibe with their music made the out-there line seem even more risqué. This was probably their desired effect, and overall the show went down pretty well in our books.

05. Sunnei

As a younger brand, Sunnei still had a lot to prove at the runway where the show is usually dominated by much older luxury houses. Opening up with ‘The Bomb’ by the Bucketheads definitely got heads turning, and from there the front row got up and started dancing. Yep, we’re talking flash-mob mid fashion show. The fresh luxury sportswear made a lasting impression, and as they moved into ‘Thong Song’ by Sisqo, the brand did very well for their Milan Menswear Week debut. The music choice and the dancing too showed they are a brand willing to take risks and are down to get playful in the process. You can take an introductory look at the background of their brand below, and you can watch their SS17 dance battle of a runway here.

06. Versace

Donatella Versace probably takes the cake with her music choice. In the wake of Prince’s passing in April, fans and celebrities have been taking time out to pay tribute in a range of ways. As Prince and Versace were close friends, it seems fitting she used his work as the soundtrack to her Versace Menswear runway. But in this case, the songs played were never-before-heard tracks from her own personal collection that the singer had sent her. She finished the show playing a song titled ‘The Future’ so as to showcase her belief in never looking back. The line itself was very much set to the same mantra, debuting a line of athleticwear amongst the contemporary take on suits that took the brand into a sporty-luxe season. The rich purples and array of neck ruffles also very much complemented the choice in music, and we’re sure that the ‘Purple Rain’ singer would be proud of the line as it pushed the boundary on the conventional.
