These images of wildly disproportionate animals sitting amongst Beijing‘s buildings may seem humorous, but Chinese artist Liu Di is using them to bring attention to an important yet ignored issue.  “Looking out at the decrepit housing blocks,” he said, “I had a vague but strong feeling that there was something missing between the ground and the sky.” That’s when he came up with his idea for his 2008 series Animal Regulation.

The animals have been photoshopped into Beijing’s urban ruins to point out how much abandoned space is being wasted, and we can’t help but notice ‘the panda in the room’ … so to speak.

The photographs are apart of a group exhibition curated by Barbara Pollock, called My Generation. The exhibition is the first in the US to focus exclusively on post-Mao nonconformist Chinese artists. The show is only display simultaneously at the Tampa Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg until September 28.
