During the late 20th century the American Defence Intelligence Agency, commissioned artists and designers to create a massive archive of over 1,000 paintings featuring Soviet military hardware. The paintings were often created from photographs that were classified or contained sensitive information. Until recently many of these paintings and drawings remained classified until the DIA released many of them during the late 1990s. The paintings were used to illustrate publications and support official briefings when sensitive photographs could not be shown. These images show how the US depicted Soviet weapons as almost mythical, they appear almost as though they should be a part of a children’s book.
