The unstoppable juggernaut that is Kaws opened his latest show Nature of Need the other day at Galerie Perrotin, Hong Kong. The artist has stuck close to his signature style, with neon examinations of pop culture icons with the signature X’ed out eyes dominating most of the gallery. The focus of the exhibition was one of the artist’s largest vertical works, featuring fifty-plus rectangular canvasses laid out side by side to form an ongoing work.

Kaws’ work has always engaged people with it’s instantly recognisable source material, but there’s a lot more at play than some straight pop culture remixes here. The deconstruction of these icons fundamentally changes the way that people engage with this every day material. It’s no surprise that Kaws is on track to become one of the biggest names in contemporary art.
