Mixmag and Olmeca Tequila have joined up to produce a short documentary on the creation of Daft Punk’s helmets, providing insight into evolution of the now iconic masks.

The video, at just five and a half minutes, is packed with detail about the technology, ideas, and creation behind the helmets. It charts the progress from their early inspiration from the film The Day the Earth Stood Still, to the modern day super-slick incarnation.

A designer from the helmets’ creators, Alterian Inc., describes how they worked to fit Guy Manuel and Thomas Bangalter’s musical personas, allowing them to perform as the personalities of Daft Punk rather than as people. Also featured are some of Mixmag’s Daft Punk covers from the archives that provide a look at the band’s changing image as well.

The video comes as the latest part in Olmeca and Mixmag’s Switch on the Night series. Check it out above.
