So last week we came to you with the proposal that it’s the perfect time to get around local budding artists. Having come from very humble beginnings ourselves, we get that it can be difficult to break through those early stages of promoting your craft. We also get that figuring out which exhibition opening to go to on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday arvo/night, can be just as tough of a battle, so we’ve combined our appreciation of the two to bring you another round of WYD (“What you doing?” FYI). So take a look at what’s definitely worth putting on the social calendar this week and ask yourself (and your mates) WYD?

01. From Dust - Melbourne

Melbourne-based creative Maddy Young is set to premiere her exhibition From Dust as a part of Outré Gallery’s ‘Small Wall Project’. As an avid observer of natural life, she is “fascinated with complex flowers and plant life, and documenting small parts of the world.” She shares our passion for Melbourne as a creative hub, where she sees “an abundance of gifted young artists and illustrators who are finding their feet and exploring their creativity,” she said in a recent interview with Nicola Mitchell. “I think it’s a really interesting time for the Melbourne art scene as I see so many people trying new things and taking chances, and more people are paying attention to what people are creating.”

Young is one such creative worth paying attention to. This exhibition showcases the product of capturing “brief still moments in time,” where she has put emphasis on “the soft and decorative harmony between the natural and manmade”. Be sure to check out the Facebook details of her event here, and take a look at some more of her fascinating work in the meantime.

02. No Cure Launch Party - Brisbane

With the release of their 12th issue ‘High Voltage’ just around the corner, the good people at No Cure Magazine are set to celebrate its drop in the appropriate fashion. AKA $6 beers.

Having reached out to artists of gig posters and album artwork to get a better understanding of how they come up with inspiration, the new issue of the mag is set to be a game changer. Having decided to start thinking outside the box, this issue is unique in its shape: cut like a square, it now resembles a vinyl record.

Held at The Culprit Club, the event will be kicking off at 6pm with heaps of limited edition prints and other magazines up for grabs. Head over to the Facebook event for details, and check out their site for a sneak peek of some of the pages from the issue.

03. Little Establishment - Melbourne

There is something to be said of finding the perfect jacket. Several factors denote perfection and in our books, individuality is a major key.

Working in collaboration with a range of artists, Little Establishment is leading the pack where unique denim and leather pieces are concerned. With a focus on both originality and quality, the second instalment to their jacket showcase is set to explore prevalent themes of depression and anxiety in a way that seeks to shed a positive light on the all too misunderstood issues. A quick roll call of the artists sees pieces from the likes of Adam Atkinson, Pete Ashton, DOGWRONG667, Jordie Halsall, Matt O’Brien, Montaine Stuart, Gareth Sther, Pigeon Boy , Taylah Kleid, Jamie Edward, and Maddison Kitching.

The show is set to run at Prahran’s Enough Space from the 8th until the 11th, so make sure you come through to take a look at some of the freshest threads Melbourne has on offer and head to their Facebook event for more details.

04. Yung 'n' Sprung - Melbourne

Okay this is a big one so we’re going to try and break it down for you. The team behind Working Class Secret Service are coalescing a pretty big handful of talents to make the group exhibition Yung ’n’ Sprung. Featuring over 20 creatives, the gallery will run for the three days at the No Vacancy Gallery in QV. Probably one of the best parts is that of those being exhibited, some are well known and loved, but there are a handful who are yet to have exhibited before.

It takes a lot to put your stuff out there, especially the first time around, so be sure to roll through and support the up-and-comers. We’ve got illustrators, designers, digital and film photographers all in the one place. Be sure to take a look at the Facebook event for more details because this isn’t one to be missed.

05. Beams Arts Festival - Sydney

The lineup for the annual BEAMS festival is almost too crazy to comprehend. With over 350 creative works spanning across all fields, we’re talking light, video, performance, dance, site-specific sculptural installation and live music showcases.

Not to mention the team behind it all has put out a plug for graffiti artists to get involved in their 100m-long graffiti wall, so there’s no saying how it will turn out. Set to be unlike anything else, be sure to take a look at their page to get your head around just how big this event is going to be. It’s unreal to see art taking such  a place of importance in the city, as well as the amount of opportunities for artists it’s providing, so don’t let this one slip your radar.
