We’ve all been there – had a massive fight with mum and swore to runaway to a new life in Hawaii… Well this kid actually did it.

The male teen left his Santa Clara home following an argument to scale the San Jose Airport fence and crawl inside the landing gear wheel well of a Hawaiian Airlines Boeing 767 bound for Maui. Aside from raising some serious questions about airport security (if a 16-year-old can do it…) the teen’s getaway is also a miraculous tale of survival.

The teen survived sub-zero temperatures, a lack of oxygen and the extreme air pressure that comes with at flying 38,000 feet for the entire five-hour flight before landing safely (though conceivably dazed and confused) at Kahului Airport of sunny Maui. He claims he lost consciousness during take off and regained it an hour after landing.

“It’s amazing,” said Roger Connor, curator at the National Air and Space Museum. “He’s very, very lucky to be alive. Something like that happens only once in a long time.” In fact, Connor said, most people wouldn’t survive more than a few minutes at 30,000 feet.

Out of the 105 people who have attempted this feat since 1947 only 25 have survived – giving aerial stowaways about a 25% survival rate.

The 16-year-old was found carrying only a comb with him and has since received medical treatment. The FBI, which is investigating the incident, stated that the teen would not face charges, but instead be referred to child protection services.
