Come out to play: The Warriors is being turned into a TV series

First a novel, then a movie and now a TV series

Posted by

Marvel film directors Joe and Anthony Russo are taking a leap of faith and have teamed up with Paramount TV and Hulu to create an hour-long drama series adaptation of the 1979 cult-classic film, The Warriors. The iconic directors are known for their work on Captain America — The Winter Soldier and Civil War, and are set to also direct upcoming Marvel’s Avengers movie adaptations.

The Warriors 1979 film was originally an adaptation of Sol Yurick’s 1965 classic novel. The movie adaptation was set in New York during 1979, where parts of the city resembled gang-inflicted, war-torn Mogadishu. The plot surrounds the gang, “The Warriors” being falsely accused of killing a rival gang member, resulting in every other gang attempting to kill them before they can make it back into their territory.

The Russo brothers, in collaboration with Getaway Productions and Mike Larocca, and Lawrence Gordon (who was the original film’s producer) will produce the TV series, which will be written by Frank Baldwin. The director of the TV remake is still unknown, but the Russo brothers have said they will add their own “grit, pulp, sex and violence” to the TV adaptation.

Until the remake, settle your nostalgia with this Rolling Stone tribute. Also, check out the above gallery of some of our favourite scenes from the iconic movie.
