I would start this piece by sarcastically announcing “It’s official! Hollywood has run out of ideas!” But wouldn’t that, too, be a completely un-original jab? Instead, I’ll just say this; to hell with film yuppies.

According to The Hollywood Reporter a remake of the 1992 sports comedy White Men Can’t Jump has been given the green light by 20th Century Fox. That’s right. The endlessly quotable, odd couple classic will be catapulted into the 21st century, in what we can only assume would be a half-arsed, soulless cash grab.

The film is being produced by Kenya Barris, who is the creator of the critically lauded comedy series Black-ish and who is also currently working on a remake to Shaft. Blake Griffin of the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and Ryan Kalil of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers have also signed on as producers. The remake will be the first project for Griffin and Kalil’s new production company, Mortal Media. Great start, guys.

There’s no word on the storyline or whether any significant changes will be made to the 1992 film’s premise of basketball hustlers in inner-city Los Angeles. However, you can’t help but wonder who could ever replace the dynamic duo of Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson. Better yet, who the hell could ever replace Rosie Perez?

That being said, it is TBT. Check out a classic scene from White Men Can’t Jump below.
