At first I figured Instagram launching their new messaging service “Instagram Direct” was just a less shameful version of Snapchat. A way to send pics to just one person off your followers list, not all those bitches from high school that you don’t want judging you for taking selfies with a stray dog…or something. But now that I think about it, it very well has the potential to become just another platform for titty pics and suggestive selfies, one word – filters.

Who doesn’t look better after some Valencia or Low-Fi treatment? Maybe they’re onto something great, or really terrible. The addition allows users to snap a picture, add a filter (duh) then select a singular person to send it to. Unlike Snapchat, the picture doesn’t disappear after max 10 seconds, and there’s also an option to chat through instant messaging underneath the photo. Facebook’s ownership of Instagram shines through with the focus on real time – users are able to talk to their friends in real time, and of course are able to see when the other party has viewed the photo or comments, yes, that evil feature that instigates cat fights worldwide. At this point group photo messages or text-only posts aren’t possible, but it hasn’t been ruled out for the future of Instagram Direct.

Perfectly saturated selfies-to-boys ahoy.
