Not long ago, a friend of mine had their house broken into. Among other things, their laundry detergent was stolen. At first I found it really strange – why bother stealing laundry detergent? But according to some recent research into the most popular items to steal, laundry detergent comes in at number one.

The everyday, and highly unsuspecting item is apparently traded for drugs, or even sold at near store prices on the black market. If you thought that was weird, other items making the top 10 are Nutella, steak, and manhole covers…

Rich Mellor of the National Retail Federation (NRF) suggests that the rise in these bizarre items being stolen is because of ease rather than desirability. Let’s face it, it’s a lot easier to steal a few jars of Nutella than a luxury car.

Just so you have a heads up, here’s a list of the top 10 most popular strange items to steal;

1. Laundry detergent
2. Allergy medicine
3. Pregnancy tests
4. Catalytic converters
5. Manhole covers
6. Nutella
7. Sap
8. Shrubbery
9. Small boats
10. Steak

Afraid? You should be. No bottle of detergent, no pregnancy test is safe. Forget about locking the garage, lock the damn cupboards.
