Staff riding is local slang for train surfing in Katlehong, South Africa. Marco Casino’s documentary follows the youths behind the dangerous sport, which is widely popular in the poverty-stricken township.

The train surfers, most of who are under 25 face severe injuries, amputations and often death for the rush of standing on top of a moving train. Describing the sport as a “suicide mission”, the surfers themselves see it as a “way to express your feelings” and “taking off your anger”.

Staff Riding won first prize in the Online Short Category from the 2014 World Press Photo Multimedia Contest
