Few media personalities are as eccentric and fascinating as Canadian interviewer, radio host, and musician, Nardwuar the Human Serviette, or John Ruskin as his mother calls him. His unorthodox interview techniques and remarkable knowledge of his subjects make his conversations with the celebrity world a must-watch. Nardwuar is known for presenting his guest with unusual items relevant to important moments in their past, especially when it comes to his hip-hop guests, who often receive highly sought after and sentimental records from the tartan hat-wearing journalist. With a new interview featuring Drake and Noah “40” Shebib set to air any day now (we hope), here’s a collection of our favourite Nardwuar hip-hop interviews.

01. N*E*R*D

One of Nardwuar’s best efforts is his first meeting with N*E*R*D members Pharrell Williams and Shay. While Shay adds his two cents here and there, it’s all about Pharrell, who’s totally blown away by the props Nardwuar brings along. When Nardwuar produces a copy of Carl Sagan’s Music Of The Cosmos, Pharrell appears genuinely shocked. He goes onto proclaim, “This is one of the most impressive interviews I’ve ever experienced in my life,” when handed a copy of ‘Rump Shaker’, one of the first records he worked on. Nardwuar also cites this as one of his favourite interviews as it led to Pharrell hooking him up with Jay Z for a chat at The Pemberton Music Festival.

02. Snoop Dogg

Since first meeting in 2002, Snoop Dogg has become one of Nardwuar’s most frequent guests, having been interviewed eight times. While hard to pick a favourite Snoop moment, his 2010 interview where the known weed smoker rolls a joint and then microwaves it to “trap the ingredients in,” has to be a highlight. The two also talk about hockey, Snoop’s appreciation of The Gourds country cover of ‘Gin And Juice’, and the first edition of Smoke Fest Volume 1 on VHS, a film Snoop directed and shot.

03. Kendrick Lamar

Just as Kendrick Lamar was blowing up after the release of good kid, m.A.A.d city, Nardwuar got the opportunity to interview the humble rapper. Seeming genuinely enthusiastic and amazed at Nardwuar’s knowledge of West Coast hip-hop and his own history, Lamar couldn’t believe some of the albums he was presented with. It gets even better when TDE labelmate Jay Rock gets involved while the rest of Lamar’s crew, including Ab-Soul, hang in the background.

04. Nas

Not all of Nardwuar’s interviews are fun-filled experiences, as was the case with hip-hop legend Nas. Things were going well and Nas had a vested interest in the conversation until Nardwuar brought up the Jay Z diss track ‘Ether’. Nas’s demeanour immediately changed and he refused to discuss the song. He wanted no further part in the conversation, declaring Nardwuar “a fucking psychopath” and cutting things short before Nardwuar could perform his famous freeze frame pose he ends all interviews with.

05. DJ Khaled

Any interview involving DJ Khaled — his appearance on the Ellen Show to his last legendary spot on Ebro’s Hot 97 morning show — is guaranteed to entertain, so putting Nardwuar with the self-proclaimed “hip-hop Quincy Jones” is a no-brainer. Throughout the 20 minute conversation, Khaled gets more and more hyped about the records Nardwuar pulls out as he discusses being a vegan, the ideal studio temperature, and his time working as bus boy during his early days. Khaled is often amazed at some of the things Nardwuar knows, but draws the line at talking about his family. Thankfully, unlike Nas, Khaled fends the questions off with his usual charm without the interview turning into a total farce, like the time Nardwuar talked with Blur in 1996.

06. A$AP Rocky

This one’s an absolute blast. While A$AP Rocky is the focus, the majority of the A$AP Mob are in attendance, with the likes of Ferg, Ant, and Yams left in stitches by Nardwuar’s unique line of questioning about Angie Martinez, The Diplomats, and the Harlem rap scene. Rocky even calls him, “a fucking psychic genius”, while Nardwuar’s final pose lasts for well over a minute as the A$AP Mob dance and joke around him.

07. Questlove

Straight off the bat, Questlove can’t believe his eyes when Nardwuar presents him with a Motortown Revue poster. Explaining the historical significance of the poster, Questlove can’t contain his excitement at receiving the gift and spends the entire chat in awe of Nardwuar. The two discuss Philadelphia’s rap history and Questlove’s vast musical knowledge, with The Roots drummer left in stunned hysterics throughout the interview. If you really dig this clip, be sure to check out the full-length interview that goes for just over 45 minutes and contains all sorts of informative gems from the clued-up duo.

08. Odd Future

When Nardwuar asks Tyler, the Creator his name and he replies “R. Kelly”, you know you’re in for an interesting experience. One of the most-viewed Nardwuar clips on YouTube, Tyler spends the majority of the interview laughing and acting up, with cameos from Hodgy Beats and the Odd Future crew helping this one make the list. You’ll never look at bacon soap the same way again.
