A new wave of Dilla music is on the way

Ma Dukes opens up her sons vault yet again

Posted by

Dilla fans, rejoice. Our girl Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey has been at it again, compiling a new album from her late son’s extensive vaults.

The latest project is titled Motorcity, a tribute to Dilla’s hometown Detroit. Since his untimely passing in 2006, Ma Dukes has been putting in hours on hours of work to bring unreleased tracks out of his extensive vault and to the people. Each track on the record was hand-picked and sequenced by the queen herself.

Motorcity comes in as the next posthumous release after the full-length album The Diary, and the compilation Jay Dee’s Ma Dukes Collection. There’s no doubt she’s doing fans a huge service by sharing Dilla’s music with the world—but this piece gets more personal than ever before. The record is framed like a letter to her son and includes a handwritten letter from Ma Dukes herself. CD and vinyl editions will be available, along with the option to cop a bundle with a shirt, cassette, slipmat and Flexi 7”.

In celebration of the release, Dilla’s close friend J Rocc has compiled a series of blends of the new material, which you can listen to below (on repeat) until Motorcity is made available on April 21.
