February 11 should have been the real Valentine’s day this year, since it marked 20 years since Erykah Badu’s debut (and incredible) album, Baduizm, graced our ears.

Posting on her Facebook, the now 45-year-old shared a video of herself from two years before her iconic album dropped. Captioned “I guess you just gotta take that first leap…? One night I did. Open Mic BROOKLYN MOON CAFE 1995AD”. Badu has as much of a presence in this tiny cafe as she does on any stage, with her gorgeous yellow head scarf and familiar style showing she really didn’t change herself all too much for fame.

In the clip, she sings ‘On & On’, a song which spent four weeks at number one on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart and is one of her most recognisable pieces. Badu was heavily influenced by R&B, ’70s soul, and ’80s hip-hop, helping to both repopularise the genres and help to birth a generation of neo-soul. Not someone to be anyone but herself, Badu was well recognised for her elaborate head scarves and individual style.

Erykah remains a relevant figure in music today, keeping busy constantly, most recently appearing with D.R.A.M on Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform their song ‘WiFi’ together. Badu was and is a woman who personifies strength, beauty, and intelligence and should long be remembered for the impact she had on the music scene.
