I wanted to introduce you guys to cln when he released ‘Better Than’, but 90,000-plus plays on SoundCloud happened and made introductions a little redundant. If you weren’t one of the 90k, then here’s my chance to namedrop Callan Alexander, a producer from Brisbane who I anticipate will grace the summer festival route with his breezy and pretty (am I allowed to say pretty?) beats. His latest offering ‘Sideways’ is also the title track of his forthcoming EP and is best listened to while horizontal in bed (with headphones on, reading a cult classic, you perve).

EAVESDROPPING ON CLN

Who are you?

My name is Callan. I just turned 19 and I make music under the name cln. I also go to uni and spend far too much time playing video games.

Where are you from?

I’m from Brisbane – I moved here in 2009 from South Africa.

What is unique about your local music scene?

Honestly Brisbane is really difficult from the perspective of a budding electronic producer. There are only a few small venues that actually support non-mainstream, up-and-coming electronic artists. Besides that, unless you are What So Not or someone with a huge following, you really need to know people if you want to gig regularly. There are heaps of interesting musicians up here though. Really talented people – it’s just hard to get exposure.

Describe your sound in three words. Go!

Chilled, synthy, reverby.

What makes you unique as an artist?

I’d like to think that I’m trying to develop sounds and ideas that are new to me whenever I start working on a track. I don’t really fit specifically to one genre, and I usually tend to explore when I produce instead of sticking to a routine. So I guess that results in a sound that’s somewhat different.

Have you heard any new music lately? Got any recommendations?

There’s a tonne of Australian producers putting out amazing stuff that deserve a lot more exposure. A guy called Hounded from Sydney makes some incredible chilled stuff. Fe-Ki from Brisbane makes some really good hip-hop inspired beats. Golden Vessel, also from Brisbane, makes some amazing lo-fi stuff too. All of them are brilliant.

Tell us a little about this release?

This release has been a long time coming really. I’ve been holding onto a whole bunch of originals for a very long time. Some of the songs in the EP I’ve been working on for over a year, so it’s been a really slow meticulous process trying to get them to a sound that I’m happy with. I really wanted to put something out that I could be proud of. I’m super excited for it to finally be released.

What inspired the artwork for this track?

I’d love to say there’s some deep meaning behind the artwork, but there’s really not. I just think chameleons look cool.

What else are you working on at the moment?

All my work up until this point has basically been for the EP I think. I have a few ideas for collabs and a tonne of unreleased singles that need somewhere to go. I’m thinking of releasing a nice long album for my next project, but who knows. I’ll just go with whatever happens.

Do you have any shows coming up?

I’m looking at trying to play as many shows as possible in the coming months. On June 8, just before the EP release I am supporting the fantastic Midnight Pool Party at The Standard in Sydney. Come see me if you’re nearby!
