Have you ever wondered what it would be like to wake up one morning, Kafka-style, as a giant joint? You’d probably eat your weed cereal, go for a skate and discend into a haze of Simpson’s re-runs. At least, that how Brooklyn producer Keswick imagines it for the first video of Going Great, a stand-out track from his latest LP Imaginate.

Keswick’s production pushes the boundaries of ‘normal’ hip-hop with his Grateful Dead-inspired instrumental album and this latest LP moves into a more classic, if not slightly trippy, boom-bap style, featuring vocals from Guilty Simpson and Skyzoo and YC The Cynic. He answers our SMALL TALK questions and grab a free download of the LP below.

My name is…  Keswick.

I live in…  Brooklyn, New York. Home of Biggie, Spike Lee, MCA (RIP), and the world-famous Nathan’s hot dogs.

My LP is called…  Imaginate

Some of the things that inspired it are…  The heights and depths of my imagination, as well as Brooklyn sunrises, collages, graffiti, psychedemia, bed bugs, cheesesteaks, Zen Buddhism, experimentation, trains and Ego Death.

It’s cover art looks like… A limitless space-trip through meatloaf mountains. Shouts to Herm!

My favourite track is… On Imaginate? Probably For the Win Skyzoo and YC the Cynic absolutely murdered their verses.

The person I can imagine listening to it is… It sounds cliché, but really, anyone who loves new music. Nerds, stoners, hip-hop heads, festival goers, couch potato burn-outs, teachers, Psychonauts, scientists, the kids from City of God, hipsters, dogs, cats, grandmas… listeners.

My favourite mixtape would include… What We Do – Freeway (ft. Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel), followed by The Beastie Boys, The Grateful Dead, J Dilla, Curtis Mayfield, Seesaw by Groundation, Lord Quas, The Roots, Elevators by Outkast, Sublime, Edan, and Ganja Free by Clancey Eccles.

When I’m not making music I… Listen to music, watch sports, dig for records, learn. A lot of eating and sleeping as well.

The last thing I downloaded was… Nice try Feds, I see you…

The next project I’m working on is… I try to keep busy, so I’m working on 3 projects at the moment. A cosmic instrumental concept-collaboration with Benjamin Bradley of Crakk Nicholson, under the pseudonym Nerf Shot. I’ve also produced an EP for the Brooklyn rap group Onionheads, who are recording their vocals in Mozambique at this very moment. Lastly, another mostly-instrumental full-length Keswick LP.
