20 years have passed since Nas captivated hip hop heads and critics alike with his debut album Illmatic, a rap gospel that perfectly encapsulated the environments and experiences of his upbringing in Queensbridge, New York. The album’s rich assortment of themes and influence are a jumping point into the wider sound of the early 90’s New York rap, both acting as a perfect summary and begging for a wider explanation of the then-young rapper’s insights.

Time Is Illmatic serves as that context. The film follows Nas as he returns to his childhood home, discusses his influences and the struggles he faced in trying to get signed. It opened to glowing reviews and even now maintains a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes (That’s a higher score than The Wizard of Oz, Rotten Tomatoes voted best film of all times).

Titillated? Good, because we have double passes to the exclusive Melbourne screening of Time Is Illmatic to give to five very lucky winners. For your chance to win, shoot us an email comp(at)acclaimmag.com*. Please make sure you include your full name in the email.
