OK, so I guess it’s not digging that deep. Apparently the video and song aren’t about asses at all. According to GQ, “‘Anaconda’ is about a snake, and also about a woman’s ex-boyfriends, and the video is just one big slumber party.” Nicki Minaj had a chat with GQ recently and upon discussing the ‘Anaconda’ video, Minaj simply states “I don’t know what there is to really talk about, I’m being serious… I just see the video as being a normal video.” Alright then, Nicki. Normal videos don’t go viral.

“I think the video is about what girls do. Girls love being with other girls, and when you go back to us being younger, we would have slumber parties and we’d be dancing with our friends.” Yes, that’s true. However, fast forward 10 years and I’m pretty sure I don’t just hang with my gal pals in skimpy outfits while touching each other’s butts (much to my guy friends’ disappointment).

The girl brings it back to power and control in the end, “I’m chopping up the banana. Did you realize that? At first I’m being sexual with the banana, and then it’s like, ‘Ha-ha, no.’ …that was important for us to show in the kitchen scene, because it’s always about the female taking back the power, and if you want to be flirty and funny that’s fine, but always keeping the power and the control in everything.” You go, girl. Can’t say I don’t agree with her on that front. #PussyPower

I have no problem with Nicki Minaj presenting her well-rounded butt to me on my computer screen. But don’t tell that us the video and song isn’t about asses. It is clearly about asses. And that’s cool.

Read the whole GQ feature here (warning: major hater vibes from the writer).
