Syd finally drops her debut solo single and accompanying visuals

The Internet singer-songwriter spits bars on fame, friends, and keeping family together

The Internet’s chief singer-songwriter, Syd [aka Syd Tha Kyd] has finally dropped her long-awaited debut single and it’s sure to be a shock to some of her more orthodox fans. ‘All About Me’ is the first single from singer/producer’s upcoming debut solo record, Fin which is due to hit shelves sometime this year.

Unlike the funk and soul influences for which she is best known, Syd goes full MC here, flexing her introspective muscles. The production on ‘All About Me’ is both sparse and sinewy; a grime influence which can’t be denied.

It’s also both celebratory and downtrodden as fuck. Just as the visuals show Syd and her crew – including Tyler, the Creator and Hodgy – waxing lyrical and partying up, the lyrics tell a different story.

“I see fame as a nuisance/ I don’t take it for granted but sometimes I can’t stand it.”

It’s an emotional double entendre that runs concurrent with much of Syd’s music, but here it stands out like a sore thumb. However, the lyrics – and visuals – also suggest an earnest need for unison among friends regardless of fame or distance.

“Take care of the family that you came with,” is her most alluring message, one that perhaps shines the most through this murky release.
