It’s probably safe to say that for most ’90s kids, Robin Williams’ Jumanji was an iconic film for so many reasons. The fantasy, the star cast, the crazy af animals everywhere. As terrifying as it appeared, there was always a secret desire to be plonked right in the middle of that epic movie. For West London MC Jelani Blackman, this reference is all too real and the film served as a fitting theme for his recently released mixtape Jelanji.

Yep, you guessed it, Blackman’s project is spilling over with heavy jungle vibes and is the kind of playlist to get your heart pumping – whether you’re listening to it solo, turning it up on a dancefloor, or actually running from a pack of wild monkeys. The project speaks for itself and takes you on a journey through Jelani’s complex world.

But don’t think that the jungle theme is just some surface-level interest, his love of Jumanji is very, very real. As well as sharing the news of his latest project, the MC also decided to offer up some alternative soundtrack options for some of the key scenes from the film. Check out is on-point suggestions in the list below.

Jelanji is out now and available to download here.

01. Lite Spots (Kaytranda) - Monkeys in the Kitchen

Cheeky vibe on this track and the monkeys are definitely down for mischief. They kick off the adventure with some lightness but they’re clearly not ramping. Couple knives get very casually thrown at the kids setting the tone for much more real danger later. Still, they’re mainly chilling on happy levels and if they were having a rave I reckon this song would just be on repeat while they kept it bubbling.

02. Feed Me (Jelani Blackman) - Toothy Lion

“No one is more famous for getting his jaws out than a lion, we know this (except for maybe Jaws the shark and James Bond Jaws). The tension as the track builds works as the lion starts closing in on the kids, preparing to attack. When it all kicks off in Feed it’s a madness, not for the faint hearted, pretty much the same as what it would be like being come at by a vex lion. It’s also the point in the film that my man Alan first jumps in to save the day, so definitely wanted to have a track off my old school jungle-inspired mixtape Jelanji dropping in to introduce the wild man escaping after 26 years trapped inside the rawness of the game. ”

03. Many Men (50 Cent) - The Dedicated Hunter

“It’s a serious on tops for Alan in this chase with the unnecessarily offensive and angry hunter. The hunter is looking to end him without mercy and I feel like all Alan must be singing in his head over the hail of gunshots is this song. I’m sure if the track had been out at the time it would’ve made the cut for this scene. Could even be the hunter’s theme song because he stays on this Alan hunt basically all the way through the film once he’s started. Poor Alan, most people have never dodged a rifle running through a jungle covered house but catch anyone at rush hour and you can see the words to this tune in their eyes, the feeling is real.”

04. Original Nuttah (Shy FX) - Nutty Stampede

“If there’s any scene in this film that’s instantly recognisable it’s this one. Just all out chaos when the stampede comes through and ends whatever thoughts these guys had left that this game was gonna be a chilled one like chess. Because Jumanji would lay out chess in a mosh and a tune like ‘Original Nuttah’ is needed to back this rowdy moment. Shout out all the original nuttahs who’ve been bussing down walls, doors and bodies to this track without the excuse of an ancient cursed board game.”

05. Eskimo (Wiley) - Too Big spiders

“This scene bugged me out loads when I was younger, not a fan of spiders on a good day, definitely not down for massive ones coming for my unprotected face. The way this tune creeps in fully reminds of that crawling spider movement, but more importantly, when it drops, in my head it’s the moment I’d free myself from the floorboards and cause a ruckus with those eight legged freaks. It would be me or them. And if they had ever seen me out when this track comes on, they’d take a moment to reconsider and back away.”
