If you didn’t know already, the Idea Channel is an awesome PBS show that examines the connections between pop culture, technology, and art. Their latest vid connects our generation’s obsession with dubstep to the Italian futurists – an avant-garde movement nearly eighty years old. These dudes experimented with the notion of noise as music and machines as musicians, and whilst they were total outcasts, they successfully predicted trends in music that were to become widely accepted eighty years later. The clip points out that changes in technology and music genres have primed our ears to enjoy the music of Skrillex and Bassnectar. Whilst to some people it still just sounds like noise, the video certainly makes a convincing case. Wub wub wub.
