One thing that long-running (and still running) Canadian teen drama Degrassi has always done well is avoiding getting too preachy about young adult issues. Throughout its initial run it tackled various rites of passage (sex, drugs, sexuality) with a bit of heart and a minimum of soapboxing.
And, for the most part, this approach has continued from the late-’80s-early-’90s original series into the Next Generation, which kicked off in 2001 and introduced the world to a young Drake (then known as Aubrey Graham), who played the popular Jimmy Brooks.
Despite this lack of heavy-handed moralising, the show’s storylines about drug experimentation never really had a happy ending. Which is why this video of Drake grabbing his double-cup and doing a shot of (maybe) lean from a brand new Grammy award will always have a special place in my heart.
