Watch: Madlib drops production knowledge during extensive RBMA lecture

Wise words from the self-proclaimed "loop digger"

Posted by

With one the biggest resumes in music production, Madlib joins Red Bull Music Academy for their second interview since 2002. Not one to talk to the press too often, this hour-long talk gives more of a look into the makings of Madlib’s mind than any we’ve had for years. The interview itself can come across as static at times, as the producer and rapper is so blunt that the audience is often shocked. Behind that however, it gives an insight which indeed confirms there’s a method to his madness. He also gives some real advice: “do your taxes.”

Having collaborated with artists such as Freddie Gibbs, MF Doom, J Dilla, and Erykah Badu, the Californian producer makes for a pretty interesting interviewee. Although he is known for his choice in relying on sampling and old-school methods in his producing, he’s not afraid to switch it up every know and then. In fact, he admits that he made the beat to Kanye West’s ‘No More Parties in L.A.’ on an iPad.

With so many producers trying to make a label out of themselves, it’s nice to hear words from one who has been in it for years just for his obsession with the tunes. Check out the full clip above and listen the one of the realest giving you the full breakdown.
