French artist JR has become renowned for large-scale paste-up photographic portraiture. His work, attitude and ideas have gained him an impressive following, especially online – the guy has over 320,000 followers on Instagram alone.

JR is now set to release his newest work, the New York City Ballet Art Series. The series involved the installation of a massive photograph of 80 ballet dancers forming the shape of a giant eye, printed on vinyl and spread across the floor of the David H Koch Theater lobby at the Lincoln Center in New York.

The enigmatic artist sat for an interview with Complex as he was completing the project, detailing his interest in ballet as a subject, his experience working with the dancers, and his love for New York, the city he now calls home.

“I fell in love with this city 10 years ago, and when I decided to set up the studio here, it accelerated a lot of things… It’s a really inspiring city for me, and a lot of the ideas I have come from spending time here.”
