Since her conception and birth via the pop culture gods in 1974, right through to her international conquest and current state of global dominance, the ambiguous, Japanese phenomenon has been widely regarded as an adorable white, pussy. Until now.

Anthropologist Christine R. Yano, is the author of ‘Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty’s Trek Across the Pacific’ and is currently in the process of curating a Kitty art exhibition for the Japanese American National Museum in LA, which will be proceeded by the first ever Hello Kitty Con, at the Museum of Contemporary Art.

In a recent interview with the LA Times, Yano explained that the 40 year old not-so-sour-pussed pop-icon, who’s real name is actually Kitty White, “is a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature”, unlike her pet cat Charmmy Kitty.

In the full interview, Yano goes on to explain that the perpetual third grader is also a Scorpio and has a twin sister. Maybe she’s a cat?
