Welcome to Acclaim Magazine’s Heat of the Week. Here are our picks for the best new local and international releases — Don’t forget to follow our Spotify playlist too, it’s updated every Friday.

01. Jesswar - XXL

Jesswar is fresh off dropping her new project Tropixx EP today, which is filled with speaker-shattering, energy-heavy bangers. A favourite of ours off the rip is ‘XXL’, which is as giant as the title suggests. Producer Noah Harvey provides an instrumental laced with eerie bell sounds and heavy 808s, allowing ample room for Jesswar to flex her finessed lyricism. Chuck this one on at work, on your commute, wherever you are; it’s vital Friday energy.

02. Genesis Owusu - Waitin’ On Ya

FINALLY! Genesis Owusu’s highly anticipated album Smiling with No Teeth is out now, and we won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a freaking journey. One of our immediate favourites off the project is ‘Waitin on Ya’, which is 5 minutes and 44 seconds of pure soul, with Winter-weeping keys, Summer-shrouded bass lines, Autumn-soaked guitars, and drums with the bounce of Spring. Genesis’ falsetto harmonies soar over the top, taking the track on a flight path to euphoria, and no matter the weather, this one is going to HIT!

03. AJ Tracey - Anxious

Ironically, we’ve been anxious for new tunes from AJ, and this one is hitting the spot. Backed by atmospheric, gloomy production from Remedee, the rapper maintains a trudging flow, as he talks through his current mindset and emotions as a blossoming veteran in the UK scene. With his Australian tour planned for January 2022 after a couple of postponements, we’re happy to have new joints to look forward to in a live setting.

04. Rei Ami - Do It Right ft. Aminé

This new ballad from South Korea-born, Maryland-raised songstress REI AMI and Portland’s Aminé is a self-reflective journey, where both artists assess situations they’ve been in throughout their life, and what they’d do differently. It’s a topic we all resonate with, and a sound we can relish in, with jangly guitars and a summery atmosphere creating the light at the end of this introspective tunnel. REI and Amine’s soulful, passion-filled vocals throughout this track are a catchy reminder that even in adversity, you should celebrate yourself.

05. 3K - Swipe

The only reason to swipe past this new track from the Melbourne group is if you’re buying it with your credit card. Benny Lago’s production on this one is spacy and hard-hitting, with Beluga Eissa’s autotuned flows gliding over the bass like butter on morning toast. It’s also accompanied by a video that features the group selling burgers out of a food truck. Fitting, because this is one tasty joint!

06. BabyT - Viral

BabyT’s new track ‘Viral’ deserves your attention. Produced by Javier Diaz, the track has a poignant 808 and flutes in the background amplifying T’s catchy, focused flow, with a smooth delivery that makes you believe every word of his braggadocio. It’s another example of the Melbourne rapper’s consistency and furthers 66 Record’s undeniable hot-streak over the last year.

07. Karma VS - Bad Boy

Now, this ain’t Puff Daddy, but this new track from New Zealand drill artist Karma VS embodies the energy of the prestigious Bad Boy records. Karma VS’s stern, confident flows are untouchable on this one, thanks to his ear-catching cadence and the drive of the 808-heavy drill production. This may be his debut track, but he hits the ground running like a veteran.

08. MNDSGN - Hope You’re Doin Better

Los Angeles artist MNDSGN has always been known for his dreamy sounds but takes it into lucid territory with this new track. Shimmering guitars, grooving basslines, and analog drum lines back up his shoegaze-y vocals, as he tackles the wholesome message of supporting your friends through hard times. It encapsulates the feelings of driving on the esplanade with the windows down, much to the signature style of his other Stones Throw counterparts.

09. Day1 - Shisha Chick

This new joint from Day1 is aptly titled because to put it simply, it brings the smoke. ‘Shisha Chick’ is a party anthem fueled by vibrant melodies from the Maori-Australian rapper and club-ready production from KP Beatz. The weather may be getting colder down here in Melbourne, but this Day1 joint is heating things with the Summer vibes.

010. Manu Crooks - Fall Apart

Manu Crooks has already started 2021 strong with tracks like ‘Summer Fr3aks’ alongside B Wise, and this new single continues that trend. ‘I Fall Apart’ is a testament to the Sydney rapper’s versatility, as he switches between melodies on the hook and bars on the verses, talking through his thoughts in an introspective manner. Manu’s reflective lyrics are backed by fluttering pianos and bellowing bass courtesy of producers Ryan Jacob, Kapblack, and Odyssee, which take this rap testimony into triumphant territories.
