Ty Dolla $ign has leapt to the high-scrutiny forefront of both hip-hop and R&B at an astounding speed. Between repping YG’s Pu$haz Ink label and flexing his soul-over-bars ethos alongside The Weeknd on tracks like ‘Or Nah’, he’s managed to notch out a clear identity and musical style with just his seven-track debut EP Beach House. With an album, Free TC, on the horizon and an Australian tour underway, we took some time to try and sneak some factoids about his upcoming music and the importance of eating healthy.
How are you doing, Ty?
I’m good, how are you doing?
Good, thanks! So last year was huge for you, what do you have planned for 2015?
2015 will be an even bigger year. It’s already starting to be a bigger year off the top. Four songs coming up. ‘Stand For’ is my single right now, it’s going crazy. I got another single after that and then my album coming soon. Its called Free TC and dedicated to my little bro TC. He’s in jail right now and it’s a shout-out to all the people locked up.
Do you have things you want to see or do when you come to Australia?
Yeah, I definitely want to see the beaches, definitely want to see the girls, and I definitely want a beach girl *laughs*.
What kind of requests do you put on your tour rider?
Fruits, vegetables, healthy snacks, rolling papers, water, fresh squeezed juice and alcohol of course *laughs*.
A balanced lifestyle is what you want. How do you stay energised while on tour and having to endure long flights like that to Australia and between cities around the country?
I work out and eat healthy. I don’t eat bad shit. Like eating like a chilli dog or something crazy and you have to do a number 2 and you can’t because the bathroom is busy and it’s terrible because people have been drunk and has pissed all over the place.
Yeah, absolutely not a good a situation. So with your next album, what kind of opportunities does having a full length album offer to you, as opposed to an EP like that of Beach House?
It’s a chance to cut an album with a big budget. I’m spending the budget wisely and it’s not about getting the big studio and going crazy. I’ve been recording at the house before going into the big studio. I’m getting some magical people to come in and do some magical shit for the music. It’s balanced, it’s a new sound. It’s real music. It’s not going to be one of those albums that you just play it for a month and it’s done. It’s going to one of those albums that’s around for at least 10 years.
Are you talking about the people you’re collaborating with yet or is that still under wraps?
I’m not really talking about the people. I’ve got a few featured homies, like Wiz and all the homies, of course. But there’s definitely some other great features on it. It’s not really about the features though. I’m making it more about Dolla $ign on this album. The features will be more like instruments.
You’ve previously said you like to have your songs flow together in a logical way when you’re sequencing a release like this, are you trying to create a narrative or story when you’re listening to this LP front to back?
I’m going to keep it quiet for the moment, till it comes out. It’s going to be crazy. Definitely crazy. It’s going to one of those albums that where you listen to it from front to back.
Were you inspired by anything in particular while making this album? Another musician, visual artist, a lifestyle that really had an effect on this album?
Ya, my lifestyle. Not going to say too much about it. Just hold on and wait for it.
Are you talking about working on Only One today?
No, I’m not talking about that today.
We really appreciate your time and we’ll see you when come out!
Can’t wait to see you all!
