Critics have been applauding Montage of Heck, the Brett Morgen-directed documentary giving us a unique glimpse into Kurt Cobain’s unreleased home movies, tour footage, and recordings. However, Buzz Osborne of the Melvins suggests that the film is not what it seems. Well, to say he suggests it is probably a bit lenient. He pretty much calls the whole thing bullshit.

The sludge metal lord Osborne (AKA King Buzzo) recently penned a piece for The Talkhouse, an outlet for musicians to discuss music. In it, he discounts the reality of a number of scenes from the film, citing the fact that he was Kurt’s high school friend and was actually there for a lot of the heroin highs, and the resulting dizzying lows.

Osborne mentions Kurt was “a master of jerking your chain”, and that many of the events in the documentary, and by extension quite a few of the things that he said in real life, were not to be taken at face value. For example, his comments on that one scene early on in the flick:

“For instance, I know the whole “I tried to fuck a fat retard” story is complete bullshit. Not even an inkling of truth. That’s too good a story to have gone this long without me hearing about it, especially if, as he suggests, the girl’s father freaked out about it at the high school. In that small-town shit-hole, exciting news of that nature would have been common knowledge before the sun set. It never happened. And the trying-to-kill-himself-on-the-train-tracks story is bullshit as well. It never happened either. There it is, though, told in a recording of Kurt’s own voice so it must be true…right? Wrong.”

Of course, he includes the standard glowing praise for Courtney Love, which is ultimately fairly tame commentary in comparison to the vicious barbs she usually cops. Perhaps most controversial is his comments on Kurt’s notoriously bad stomach, pretty much calling it a fabrication.

“Kurt also told me there was absolutely nothing wrong with his stomach. He made it up for sympathy and so he could use it as an excuse to stay loaded. Of course he was vomiting — that’s what people on heroin do, they vomit. It’s called “vomiting with a smile on your face.””

The piece is quite an intriguing read, even if you’re not a Nirvana buff, so you’ll surely want to head over and check it out in full over here.
