Ever have those dreams where you’re a big omnipotent A&R or CEO of a record label who could just commission concept albums between your artists at will? Yes I also have these dreams. Dreams of choosing ‘X’ rapper/singer to drop vocals over ‘Y’ producer’s beats, a coupling no one has ever thought of before but that works so impeccably well together that it’s hard to remember a time they were ever separate and then I pat myself on the back about what a missed opportunity not pursuing a career in the music biz was for me and why I don’t get enough kudos for being a contemporary taste maker with immaculate curation skills. But then I realise that ‘Y’ is always The Neptunes circa 2003 and ‘X’ could basically be anyone and I’m really not that genius after all…

Anyway… it would appear as though I’m not the only one who has such lofty conceptual dreams, as DJ Finesse has imagined a similar scenario and unlike myself he actually has the skills and insight to do something with this concept. While Biggie and Premier did actually collaborate on a few occassions, the general consensus is that it’s a crying shame it only happened 3 times. With his mix ‘It Was All a Dream’, Finesse has imagined an album with the two NY greats, a musical ‘what might have been’ if you like, of Biggie rapping over Premier production.
