Sydney rapper Phi11a is off to a flying start. He killed his recent verse on the 16 Bars AUNZ cypher alongside Bliss (Bliss n Eso) and 3k’s Beluga, and dropped his debut 4-track mixtape Sad Cowboy Shit via Def Jam ANZ late last year. The release is a collaborative project with renowned US producer Jimmy Duval, who has worked with some of the hottest acts from hip-hop’s new guard including Rich The Kid, Lil Pump, Ski Mask the Slump God and even co-produced XXXTentacion’s breakout hit ‘Look At Me’.

The project was recorded at Duval’s home studio in the Hollywood Hills and came about after Duval heard the young rapper’s work and was keen to link up. “Just getting the sign on from him, saying that I was a great writer from the start, that was some of the most inspiring shit”, remarked Phi11a. “He is such a genius and to have someone like that respect you makes all the struggles worth it”.

Today, Phi11a has dropped the visuals for ‘How You Been’—a high energy quick-hitter that sees the young MC showcase his lightning fast flows. The clip was shot mostly in Los Angeles, featuring shots of Phi11a and Jimmy vibing in the studio between glitched-out performance cuts and animation by Murli. Without a doubt, Phi11a is one to watch as he bridges the gap between the Australian and US rap scenes.
