The Koi Child vocalist introduces us to some talents from his hometown

Koi Child have just kicked off their national tour, playing an impressive set for the crowds at Victoria’s Golden Plains festival over the weekend, and their week is just going to get better and better. The seven-piece band, hailing from Fremantle in WA, are leading up to the release of their self-titled debut LP this week, and it promises to be filled with the warm, jazz / hip-hop vibes they’ve mastered in the short time they’ve been playing as an ensemble.

Some of this magic can be attributed to vocalist Shannon ‘Cruz’ Patterson, who has heavy hip-hop influences and consistently delivers complex, meaningful rhymes for the band. Originally hailing from South Africa, Cruz introduced us to five hometown artists who inspired him on his own musical journey and adds even more depth to the motivation behind Koi Child’s messages. Check out Cruz’s Top 5 below.

Koi Child LP is set for release on March 18. See their full tour details here.

01. Truey Donatello

I’ve known Truey personally for many years and I’ve always believed he would one day kill it as a hip-hop artist. I honestly see him as one the most underrated South African rappers and I wait in anticipation to see his success take over the country and possibly the world. Our styles are very different but I believe that he’s exceptionally good at what he does. Check out any of his music—he’s a beast.

02. 340ml

Check out their two albums called Moving and Sorry for the Delay. I first heard these guys when I was about 13 and have been a massive fan since. It’s hard to place a genre but I’d say it’s floating around contemporary dub. To this day, almost anyone who listens is hooked. Really smooth stuff.

03. Max Normal

These guys were introduced to me by my sister around the same time as 340ml. I get the same feeling listening to them and also remain a massive fan after 13 years. When I play the album Songs from the Mall, I always get the same reaction. People love the flow, content, and how the style of song and beat changes throughout the album. It never disappoints. The album is a journey that could make you crack up at some points and scare you at others. Max Normal was Watkin Tudor Jones’s first project way before MaxNormal.TV, The Constructus Corporation, or his current project Die Antwoord. Definitely give this a listen and I guarantee you’d be very pleasantly surprised.

04. Goldfish

Goldfish is a jazzy house band that bring the party straight to your ear parts. They’re a DJ duo who bring bass, keys, sax, and flute into the equation to produce exactly what house music needs in life. Some nice African vibes in there too, that brings me back home every time.

05. Savage Lucy

Another old friend. Austen and I were the outcasts in primary school and it’s pretty cool to see that we’re both doing reasonably well through our music. Savage Lucy is his band, which consists of drums, bass, and himself as the lead guitarist. There are no vocals in their music so the journey is purely based on feeling. These guys have only been rocking out for a few years but they’ve already played a few big festivals and gained radio play, which is extremely hard to do as a South African band with no vocals. I love listening to their latest EP Reverie. Guitar solos all DAY!
