For the latest episode of Beats 1 Radio’s OTHERtone, Pharrell Williams and Scott Vener sat down to discuss their influences with Justin Timberlake, Chad Hugo and Tyler, The Creator. And it wasn’t long before Williams brought up his love affair with A Tribe Called Quest and, particularly, rapper and producer Q-Tip.
“It’s so crazy how much he loves Q-Tip,” says Tyler.
“You know the first time you heard a song that made you like a group,” Williams reminisces. “The song just continued to make me feel like Stevie Wonder ‘Bridges’ makes me feel, and I just thought that was crazy.”
The group discusses Q-tip and the group’s tendency to combine heavy percussion with colourful chords.
Williams is adamant. “Think about it. You could listen to Bonita anywhere… on any kind of terrain and it will still feel ill. You could be in a rainforest and that record [could] come on and you’d be like ‘Wow, I love my life’… That was the birth of my personal interest [in hip hop].”
