The Above the Clouds owner shares his opinion on what makes for a good fit

On the current state of streetwear

I think the current state of street wear is really positive. There has been a fusion between high-end fashion & street wear and I think that’s great. The high-end fashion brands can’t deny street wear’s influence. On the contrary, I think those brands that are popping up everywhere that offer a few printed long sleeves in bright colours with matching caps are shit.

You can’t go wrong with good basics

For me, my outfit is definitely determined by what sneakers I want to wear. Straight away it influences what pants I’ll wear. For example, I don’t like wearing dark sneakers with lighter coloured jeans. Some pants sit better above certain sneakers. I don’t pin roll or anything.

These days I wear a lot of plainer tees, and not too oversized like I used to. My go-to at the moment is the Japanese Champion Reverse Weave tee. Off-white, with a small embroidered champion logo on the sleeve. From there, accessories such a watches and headwear is really dependent on what I’m doing that day.

What makes a brand worth buying into

Brands that offer a full collection with a strong direction will continue to flourish. The smaller brands that have seen success from Instagram and quick fashion trends will die off. This is a good thing! You need to build a brand identity with longevity.

Sneakers first. Always.

Naturally, I always think about my sneakers first. Other than that I get obsessed with items of clothing for short amounts of time. So usually I just put on what I’m feeling that week. I guess I also consider if I’m going out after work, I’ll put on something a little dressier if that’s the case.

We were lucky enough to catch up with him at the recently relocated ATC store to talk about the current state of the scene and the essentials of a good fit and a good brand.
