The Naughty Noughties club night is going down once again next weekend and because we’ll use any excuse to get lost in 2000s hip-hop and R&B gold, we asked the party’s DJs to take their own journey down memory lane and share their ultimate music video from that pivotal time. Taking place on Good Friday eve, this instalment of Nes’s Naughty Noughties  Sydney’s DJ Chardonnay, DJ Leon Smith, and Jordvn, will be spinning classic ’00s tunes alongside resident MC 24 Karat Kev. So if you’re in Sydney and need something to kick off your Easter long weekend, check out the full event details below. Either way, you will definitely want to see if your favourite noughties video clip made the cut.

01. 24 Karat Kev: Puff Daddy – 'Bad Boys For Life' ft. Black Rob, Mark Curry

While Puffy found his feet in the 1990s, his flamboyant ignorance really began to reach new heights in the 2000s. Case in point: the immortal video for ‘Bad Boys For Life’. Any clip featuring the original Bad Boy rapping on a roof is going to be excellent, but this star-studded affair also features Dave Navarro and Travis Barker in Puffy’s band, while he wreaks havoc and leads an entourage of scooter riders through an upper class neighbourhood. Just when you thought things couldn’t get any better, there’s the classic Ben Stiller skit and a last minute cameo from Crazy Town. Watching Puffy flex his material wealth is both inspiring and liberating.

02. DJ Leon Smith: Nelly – 'Tip Drill'

This ticks all the boxes in terms of classic 2000s rap music video tropes—oversized white tees and NFL jerseys, chains hanging low, du-rags and a random cameo from Jermaine Dupri. It also ticks all the boxes for DJ Leon Smith tropes—a mansion full of strippers and booze. The money shot of Nelly swiping a credit card through some girl’s booty cheeks cements ‘Tip Drill’ as not just the greatest music video of the 2000s, but the greatest music video of all time.

03. DJ Chardonnay: Kanye West – 'Touch the Sky' ft. Lupe Fiasco

With all of the shit that surrounds Kanye, I sometimes forget the bits that I like because I am always reminded of the bits I hate. Casting Pamela Anderson and having his trailer say ‘Evel Kanyevel’ are only just two of the many strokes of genius in ‘Touch The Sky’. It made me want to jump on a motorbike and do some ‘sick airs’, but let’s not forget about the drama—Pamela worried about her man’s safety and Kanye willing to risk it all to Touch The Sky. Also, it addresses the issue that we all know was coming: Kanye likes white girls. Every good narrative needs a little break of comedy, and this film clip provides plenty.

04. Nes: Christina Aguilera – 'Dirrty' ft. Redman

This song is pretty nostalgic for me and reminds me of my early years in high school. My best friend and I used to try to copy all the dance moves in the ‘Dirrty’ video clip, but could only manage to pull off the body rolls and still look respectable. Also, mini kilts were a real thing. I went to Catholic girls’ high school, so all the girls used to hitch up their skirts just above the knee because that’s as much as we’d get away with.

05. Jordvn: 50 Cent – 'P.I.M.P (Remix)' ft. Snoop Dogg, G-Unit

I started messing with 50 after hearing ‘In Da Club’ for the first time when my older brother picked me up from school, offending teachers and parents alike with “WE DON’T GIVE A FUCK IF ITS YO BIRTHDAY” blaring out of the speakers. However, the 50 Cent song that really stood out for me was ‘P.I.M.P.’ I first saw the video one night on Rage at some point in 2003 at 2:30am, and it was the first time I had heard the remix with Snoop Dogg and G-Unit. The next day, I begged my mum to buy the single (yes, they actually existed) and thankfully she gave in. This had me rocking my Yankees hat with the headphones on my Discman about to explode, feeling like I had found my anthem for the next year. While I may be without my old Yankees fitted, The Cliff Dive system will definitely be tested with the anthem of my youth.
